REVIEW: Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare (Non-spoiler)

Who I would recommend it for: fantasy lovers

Picture taken by indie violets, of the first book in the Last Hours trilogy by Cassandra Clare. Posted on my bookstagram.

Rating: ⭑⭑⭑⭑ / 5 stars

Background: This book is the first book in the "The last hours" trilogy by Cassandra Clare (the author of "The Mortal Instruments", "The Dark Artifices", and "The Infernal Device"). It takes place after the events of "The Infernal Devices", and revolves around the children of the beloved characters of that series. The story revolves around Shadowhunters (half-angel, half-human) and demons. The story takes place in Edwardian London.

The good:
  • Like all Clare's other books, she includes a diverse range of characters, including those of color, and LGBTQ+ characters. If you're new to Clare's books, you should know that she does not fool around with diversity. For instance, one of the main characters in this book is half-Iranian!
  • The world is well-established, although first-time readers of her book may get confused, as the rest of us have had many books before this to get used to it.
  • Humour. Her writing is just funny in general. Her characters are silly, witty, and jovial!
  • For those of us that have read The Infernal Devices, this book is an immense gift, because it allows us to reunite with the lives of our most beloved characters. However, as you will see below, this is also an issue.

The Bad:
  • This book feels like a recycled version of all her other books. We have the same love triangle, deaths, personalities. James is basically Will. Cordelia is basically Emma Carstairs. Matthew is like Jem and Alec. It is just too unoriginal.

If you plan on picking up this book, I suggest you at least familiarise yourself with The Infernal Devices first. With that being said, this book was immensely fun, and I will DEFINITELY be picking up the two other books in this series.
